What is The Best Temperature to Store & Serve Beer?

Unlock the optimal taste in your beer when serving it to friends and family at your dinner parties and find out what the best temperature you should store your beer at in today's blog post by Elite Wine Refrigeration.

We will look at the dos and don'ts of beer storage, and where you can find the perfect beer cooling solution.

Common Beer Myths

When it comes to the perfect storage of alcoholic beverages, there are many misconceptions and myths. Let's take a look into some of the common myths around beer explained.

Beer Tastes Its Best When Freezing Cold (it doesn’t!)

Beer may taste at its best when it has been stored in cold environments, as freezing temperatures will enhance the bitterness and dryness of the beer, making it taste more crisp.

However, be careful when cooling craft beers – these beers have a higher alcohol content and will lose their flavour when served too cold.

So, beer does taste its best when served cold, but not too cold.

You Can’t Drink Beer That Has Gone Warm (you can!)

False! You can re-cool beer that has gone warm, and you can do this multiple times and it won't affect the taste.

The ‘skunky’ taste that people refer to is a result of light exposure affecting the taste of the beer, not heat fluctuations.

Ever wondered why beer is always stored in dark-coloured bottles? It is to reduce light exposure to the beer.

So, you can re-cool beer after it has gone warm!

Beer Should Never Have Sediment (it can!)

Have you ever noticed stuff floating around in your beer? This is nothing to worry about if your beer is unfiltered.

Unfiltered beer has a high amount of proteins and yeast left in the solution that can bind together and fall to the bottom of your beer causing sediment.

So, there is nothing to worry about if you notice a little bit of sediment in your beer!

What Temperature Should a Beer Fridge Be Set?

It is recommended that your beer fridge should be set to a temperature of around 3–4°C. This is the perfect temperature to keep the beer chilled without freezing the beer.

However, different types of beer require different temperatures, so always be mindful of this when storing all of your beers in the same fridge.

The different types of beers and their ideal temperatures are shown below:

Beer Type Ideal Temperature
Lager and lighter beers 0–4°C
Ales 4–7°C
Belgian ales At least 10°C

If this is the case for you, then you may want to take a look at our range of dual zone fridges. The dual zone will allow you to set your fridge at two different temperatures. This way, you won't have to worry about your Belgian ales being too cold and your lager being too warm.

Considerations to Make

To make sure that your beer fridge fits nicely and complements the aesthetic of your home, you should consider the following:

Capacity- How many bottles do you need your beer fridge to hold? Beer fridges shouldn't be overstacked so having a fridge with the capacity for the right amount is essential. Here at Elite Wine Refrigeration, we have models that can fit as little as 21 bottles, to as many as 200.

Features- As previously mentioned, a feature you should look out for is whether you need a single or dual temperature zone. You should also check what temperatures the beer fridge can accommodate. Another feature to consider is the noise level of the fridge. Some fridges can be loud when turned on, so if you are planning on keeping yours on display in your home, you may want to check the noise levels.

Measurements- It is essential to check the measurements of the beer fridge match up with the amount of space that you have available for your fridge.
